TowerSec Automotive Cyber Security is a leading global solution vendor, specializes in delivering on-board cyber security software products to OEMs, suppliers and the aftermarket telematics manufacturers. Founded by a team of highly trained Israeli cyber security experts in 2012, TowerSec is backed with decades of automotive manufacturing experience and has gained unparalleled know-how in preventing automotive cyber security threats to existing and future on-board systems. TowerSec was acquired by HARMAN International Industries in January 2016.

Our end-to-end telematics cybersecurity solution for connected and autonomous cars, is comprised of three products: the innovative ECUSHIELD for in-vehicle detection and mitigation; TCUSHIELD for secure communication with the Internet; and the Cybersecurity Dashboard for Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and remote Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. The solution, named a 2017 Edison Awards Winner, safeguards, alerts and protects against out-of-bounds attacks such as those exploiting cellular channels and provides unprecedented levels of prevention against vehicle cyber-attacks.

HARMAN’s unique ‘Defense in Depth’ approach to cyber security, coupled with our comprehensive 5+1 Cyber Security Framework, are changing the way we keep the connected car protected. Each of these six layers provides an important role in meeting the overall security and includes:

  1. Securing the Hardware Platform – used to provide secure storage for Digital Certificates, Cryptographic keys, User PINS and passwords and any other project specific sensitive data
  2. OS Access Control – policy driven secure control of access to peripherals, storage and memory
  3. Hypervisor – isolation between execution domains
  4. Application Sandboxing – resource isolation between applications
  5. Network Protection – secure communications for internal networks and external world
  6. OTA Updateability – a crucial component responsible for installation of security-related updates and patches to guard against zero-day vulnerabilities or any security flaw that is detected in the field.

HARMAN’s cybersecurity solutions are well recognized in the industry and received many accolades: a 2017 Edison Awards Winner, Finalist at the 2017 Cybersecurity Excellence Awards, Frost & Sullivan’s 2016 New Product Innovation Award for Automotive Cybersecurity, Hottest Startup at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and a Red Herring Top 100 Winner in 2015.

Automotive cybersecurity has been on the agenda of governments and industry institutions, such as the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which sets standards for the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries; or the Auto-ISAC (Information Sharing and Analysis Center), a prominent industry body created by OEMs and Tier 1 companies, to enhance cyber security awareness and coordination across the global automotive industry. HARMAN is an active member in both of these institutions.
